Salty Cactus

Industry: Food & Beverage | Hospitality / Restaurant

About: Salty Cactus is a playful taco shop inspired by the colorful, sun-soaked energy of Palm Springs. The brand blends desert nostalgia, poolside cool, and a little bit of cheekiness to create a taco spot that feels like a vacation, even if you’re just stopping in for lunch.

Project Overview

Package: Brand Identity System, Package Design

Objective: Create a distinctive brand identity for Salty Cactus that captures the laid-back, colorful personality of Palm Springs while giving the taco shop a recognizable visual world that could extend across signage, packaging, menus, merchandise, and social media.

Project Challenge

The challenge was to create a Palm Springs-inspired brand without falling into the typical retro-desert clichés. Salty Cactus needed to feel fun and nostalgic, but still fresh and ownable, balancing the iconic visual language of Palm Springs with the bold, casual personality of a modern taco shop.

The Approach

I built the identity around the contrast between desert heat and poolside cool, using playful typography, bold color, and unexpected graphic elements to create a world that feels distinctly Salty Cactus. Rather than relying solely on traditional Southwestern motifs, the system pulls from Palm Springs architecture, vintage roadside graphics, colorful resort culture, and the playful attitude of a neighborhood taco shop.

The result is a flexible identity designed to feel just as good on a taco wrapper as it does on a storefront, menu, or merch piece.

Outcome

The final identity gives Salty Cactus a bold, instantly recognizable presence that feels playful, nostalgic, and distinctly Palm Springs without being overly predictable. The cohesive visual system creates a memorable brand world that can carry across the entire customer experience, from the first impression outside the shop to the packaging customers take home.
